The ATMA exists to promote the welfare and professional development of its members and, to represent its members' special interests and needs. Because of its niche in the accountancy market, it is the organisation with grass roots contact with members.

The membership consists of:

  • small business accountants
  • suburban and country practitioners who focus on taxation, management accounting and small business management
  • management accountants in commerce and government.

One of the ATMA's most important roles is as an energetic and consistent lobbyist of government and statutory bodies regarding issues of concern to ATMA members.

The ATMA maintains liaison with the Australian Taxation Office, tertiary institutions, and any other organisations that may affect members' interests.
